AXE THE CARD TAX

There’s a hidden cost pushing up prices in the UK, charged by the major card schemes because they can.

This campaign is calling for policymakers to act by
Axing the Card Tax and unleashing payments innovation.

This starts with the payments regulator investigating why the Card Tax has risen by
up to 44% since 2016.

 Paying by card shouldn’t cost a fortune, it’s time to 
Axe the Card Tax.

THE CAMPAIGN

We’re calling for action to reduce the cost of accepting card payments in the UK.

Card payment “scheme and processing fees” have increased by a whopping 600% in recent years, alongside increases in “interchange fees” for payments made by EU visitors in the UK also increasing by around 500%.

This anticompetitive behaviour means that for retailers, SMEs and consumers costs are rising.

We’re calling on the Payment Systems Regulator to crack down on these rising fees, and to facilitate the use of cheaper payment alternatives.
